Guest Post: Defending the Women of the Newsroom

I’ll be honest; I was relatively unaware of the debate surrounding the female characters of Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom until recently, which is odd because I’m a fan of the show as well as a feminist-minded woman. I guess I was unaware that others saw it as a sexist portrayal because I felt no indignation concerning the women on the show. When I first watched the pilot, I strongly connected with the high-strung, neurotic Maggie, who has ambition and potential but is young and confused about life. I share a lot of her traits. Imagine my surprise when I found that she’s one of the most hated characters on the show.

The list of grievances about the women in The Newsroom is extensive and contradictory. At this point it’s almost hard to find a ray of sunshine in the mud being raked across the Internet. I had to go looking for this fight, which is not something I particularly enjoy doing.
